This is the original sketch
by Lionel Ordaz. |

I put Lionel's sketch into
Photoshop to paint different versions of the
lighting. I did this because the image had to
be approved and voted on by Damage Comics. I
also showed this to lots of friends and everyone
pretty much liked 3a and that's what was agreed
on as the best "eyegrabber". |

This is the
pencil sketch with some fast digital color.
I did this for 2 reasons. One is so that I could
visualize how I would go about painting the
real thing. Second, I had a major deadline to
submit an image of the finished cover to the
distributor for this book. They needed the image
to print in their distribution catalog of new
comics. Good thing they only needed a 3 inch
tall image or else I wouldn've had to put alot
more detail. |

These are the
tools I will use for the painting. (from left
to right) Prismacolor pencils, low tack tape,
electric eraser, regular erasers, Iwata Micron
CM-SB, Iwata HP-SBS, old rag, q-tips, toothbrush,
paintbrushes, and Createx acrylic paint. |

| Step 1 |
From Lionel's sketch, I redrew the character
on 11x17 inch board with a red pencil. I used
cold press illustration board because I like the
texture it has. It holds the paint alot better.
I already went over the whole thing with an acrylic
wash. Like watercolor. I just watered down the
paint and brushed it on. As you can see from the
image, the base color looks a bit greenish. |

| Step 2 |
Here, I started painting the shirt and some
shadows. The tones I started adding to the skin
were very gray toned. Trying to get the variation
in color to prepare for the bruises and dead skin
feel. |

| Step 3 |
Brushed in the
background. |

| |
| Step 4 |
Added the tattoo, arm veins, and wall lines.
And this is where I began airbrushing. I used
the airbrush to start building the gradiants in
the shading and to build up some contrast. |

| Step 5 |
I added the blood here. This is where I used
the old rag, I dipped the rag in red paint, then
I used it to dab and smear color on the shirt.
I also used the toothbrush a bit to make little
splats towards the bottom. |

|
|
|
|
| |
 |
|
| |
| Step 6 |
Then I added some
more blood and scratches around the skin. I
also added some bruises by airbrushing a little
bit of violet with green around it. Another
thing that I did is add high lights to the blood,
mouth, and eye areas. This helps create that
shiny wet look. |

 |
|
| |
| Step 7 |
Almost done. Just adding the final touches,
I used a q-tip saturated with paint to write the
book title on the wall. I had to tilt the painting
to get the paint to drip in the direction I needed.
It curved a little bit but it's ok since it went
into the border area. For the dirty wall texture,
I added some water damage and a faint wallpaper
design. I also painted in the hair with a small
brush. |

| Finished |
I did the final dirt and grime effect on the walls
with the Prismacolor pencils. I also used them for the
drool off of his teeth and for the added texture around
his arm. The erasers helped alot for this to. If you
look closely, you can see that I erased little holes
and shapes around the bruises. And the low tack tape
came in handy for painting in the black border. { Click

arm. This is pretty much it, after I painted in the
black border, I scanned it into Photoshop and saved
it as a digital file. |
